Toys "R" Us To Open 55,000-Square-Foot Store In American Dream Project

Wayne-based company continues to look for a new Manhattan location for its flagship store.

Toys “R” Us will open a 55,000-square-foot, three-story store at the American Dream project that is being built in the Meadowlands, a company spokesperson said.

The store will not replace the company’s 110,000-square-foot flagship store in midtown Manhattan, which is scheduled to close Dec. 30 due to “skyrocketing” rents for the space.

Toys “R” Us is not planning on opening a separate FAO store at the American Dream, despite previous statements to the contrary by the project’s developer, Triple Five, according to a report in The Record. Toys “R” Us owns the FAO Schwartz toy brand.

Luxury retailers Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Hermès will also open stores at the East Rutherford complex.

American Dream is slated to open in the summer of 2017, more than 10 years after construction began on the project. Triple Five took over developing the project in 2011.

The project is slated to have an amusement park, indoor ski slope, and a 300-foot-tall Ferris wheel along with 300 retail stores, 21 restaurants, 45 speciality food tenants, and 20 food court tenants, the report states.
