Athlete of the Week: Off the Field with Gabrielle Romanowski

Gabrielle Romanowski, talks to Patch about getting signed to play Division I softball at Rutgers University.

Gabrielle Romanowski, a senior softball player at Freehold High School (FHS) is entering into her last season as a Colonial.

Romanowski, 17, was one of the eight FHS students recognized at the annual signing ceremony breakfast after recieving an athletic scholarship to play softball at Rutgers Universty. After officially committing to Rutgers, FHS Varsity softball Coach David Grippo acknowledged Romanowski for her athletic ability and leadership on and off the field.

“Gabby is probably one of the most athletic females I have ever been around,” said Grippo. “She has an unbelievable work ethic and she very knowledgeable of the sport, she is literally like my assistant coach.”

After the FHS signing ceremony, Freehold Patch caught up with Romanowski to find out what she will miss the most about her FHS softball days.

Freehold Patch: Where will you be playing next year?

Romanowski: I have committed to play Softball at Rutgers University.

Freehold Patch: What position to do you play?

Romanowski: Catcher and midfielder

Freehold Patch: What is your favorite season memory?

Romanowski: My favorite memories are the bus rides. On the bus is where we get to do whatever and it is where we [the team] would get pumped up by singing and doing whatever we have to in order to get ready for the game.

Freehold Patch: What will you miss from your high school softball career?

Romanowski: I will definitely miss the coach’s and the people I have come in contact with playing here. 

Romanowski and the rest of the FHS Colonials have started practice for the upcoming 2013 season. Grippo explained at the signing ceremony that his goal for Romanowski is to beat her current record of seven home-runs in a season and score eight home-runs this year.
