Freehold's CentraState Medical Center Gets 'C' Safety Grade

FREEHOLD, NJ — Freehold's CentraState Medical Center is among the 22 New Jersey hospitals that got a "C" grade in the Leapfrog Group's annual fall safety grades.

The nonprofit watchdog organization has collected, analyzed and published hospital data on safety, quality and resource use for 20 years.

Hospitals are rated with a grade between "A" and "F" based on their ability to protect patients from preventable errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

CentraState Medical Center has dropped in rating from a "B" in spring 2021 and from an "A in fall 2019.

"In some hospitals, patient safety is a top priority. Strong health care teams reduce infection rates, put checks in place to prevent mistakes, and ensure strong lines of communication between hospital staff, patients, and families," Leapfrog Group wrote on its website. "But some hospitals don’t have teams that work well together or good leadership to ensure that patient safety is the number one priority."

The Leapfrog Group said that many hospitals in this country have safety records that wouldn’t be tolerated in any other industry. According to them, 250,000 people die every year from hospital errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

In New Jersey, 30 hospitals got an "A" grade, 22 hospitals got a "C" grade and two hospitals got a "D" grade. None of them got an "F" frade.
