Many Freehold Organizations Remember Richard Shutzer, 72

Services for Richard Arthur Shutzer will begin at the Higgins Funeral Home on Friday, March 8.

Richard Arthur Shutzer, 72, of Freehold died Tuesday, March 5 at home.  He was born in Neptune and resided in Freehold all his life.

Shutzer proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for eight and a half years. He was an auto body mechanic for Ken’s Body Works, Freehold Township, and Whelan Pontiac. After that he was employed at the Higgins Memorial Home.

Shutzer was a member and Past Commander of American Legion Post No. 54, Philip A. Reynolds Detachment Marine Corps League, a former member and Ex-Captain of Engine and Hose Company No. 1 of the Freehold Fire Department, and a member of the Freehold Exempt Fireman’s Association.

He was a graduate of Freehold High School, Class of 1958.  He was a former Freehold Little League coach and member of the Freehold Senior Softball League.

He was predeceased by his mother and stepfather, Marie and John Shiroky; two brothers, Edgar and Donald Shutzer, and a sister, Dorothy Lindsay.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Sharon Clingman Shutzer; a son, Douglas Arthur Shutzer; a daughter and son-in-law, Carey Elizabeth and Brian Snyder; two grandsons, Brian Matthew and Brady Richard Snyder; three sisters, Janet Rocco, Nashville, Tenn., Gladys Steppat and her husband Ron, Freehold; and Frances Shutzer, Freehold; and a sister-in-law, Berta Shutzer, Aiken, S.C.

Visiting hours will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home on Friday, March 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Graeme Preston Foundation, Freehold First Aid and Emergency Squad, or the Freehold Fire Department Memorial Fund. On Friday, American Legion services will be held at 6:45 p.m., Marine Corps League services at 7:15 p.m., and Freehold Fire Department services at 7:30 p.m.
