Atlantic Co. Mosquito Samples Test Positive For West Nile Virus

Mosquito samples taken from three towns in Atlantic County have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to health officials.

ATLANTIC COUNTY, NJ — Mosquito samples taken from three towns in Atlantic County have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to health officials.

Samples collected by the Atlantic County Office of Mosquito Control from the 200 block of Elwood Road in Mullica, the 1200 block of Zion Road in Northfield and the 4000 block of Wintergreen Avenue in Egg Harbor Township were all confirmed positive for the virus on Sept. 14.

At this time are no reported human cases of West Nile virus in Atlantic County, officials said.

County public health and mosquito control officials are conducting mosquito surveillance, implementing additional control measures and providing educational materials to area residents and businesses.

West Nile virus is carried by infected mosquitoes and can be transmitted to birds, animals and humans.

Atlantic County health officials are urging residents to reduce their risk and the spread of West Nile virus by reducing their exposure to mosquito bites by following these tips:

  • Use an insect repellent whenever going outdoors
  • Rid properties of mosquito breeding grounds by draining standing water.
  • Clean clogged gutters; check and repair screen doors.
