New Traffic Pattern Starts This Week At Galloway Intersection

The intersection of Route 30 and Cologne Avenue will see the first flashing yellow arrow on a state highway in New Jersey.

GALLOWAY, NJ — Starting Wednesday morning, drivers will see a new traffic pattern at the intersection of Route 30 and Cologne Avenue, with something that's a first in New Jersey.

The traffic signals will be replaced at this intersection, and the signal for the dedicated left turn lane will feature a flashing yellow arrow, which is the first time a state highway in New Jersey has such a signal, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

Beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 8 until 6 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, the Route 30/White Horse Pike and Cologne Avenue Intersection is scheduled to be closed and detoured. The closures are necessary to restripe the roadway and activate new traffic signals. Local access will be maintained for residents and businesses. Access to the Bulldogs Bar and Grill will be maintained via Cologne Avenue. The following detours will be in place, per the NJDOT:

Currently, two lanes of traffic carry Route 30 through the intersection in both directions. With the new configuration, Route 30 eastbound will be restriped to three lanes at the intersection: one lane will be for left turns only and the other two lanes will take motorists straight through the intersection. Route 30 westbound will continue to carry two lanes. However, one lane will be designated for left turns, while the other lane will carry traffic straight through the intersection.

Flashing Yellow Signal

All the traffic signals are being replaced. The new traffic signal for the dedicated left turn lanes will feature four signal heads – a red arrow, a solid yellow arrow, a flashing yellow arrow, and a green arrow. There will be a dedicated left turn phase, indicated by a green arrow. The flashing yellow arrow allows motorists to yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before proceeding to turn left. The solid yellow arrow means slow down and prepare to stop, and the red arrow means stop. Traffic volume at this intersection allows for the safe, yield to turn left movement indicated by the flashing yellow signal. See below:
