HADDONFIELD, NJ — Long-time Haddonfield resident Irene Aydelotte was presented with a proclamation on Aug. 30 from the borough's commissioners in recognition of her life and in advance of her 100th birthday later this month.

Aydelotte served several years in the Women's Army Corps during World War II, ultimately achieving the rank of technical corporal, the proclamation read.

The proclamation was the latest award Aydelotte has received, the proclamation stated. In her lifetime, she has also received the Women's Army Corps Pin, Good Conduct Metal, American Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal, the proclamation stated.

In addition, Aydelotte's professional life during World War II helped change the role women play in the U.S. military, according to Haddonfield Borough Commissioner Frank Troy.

"There were about 300,000 women that served in the military during World War II, and it really was the turning point and [served as] the trailblazing we know today," Haddonfield Borough Commissioner Frank Troy said at the commissioners' Aug. 29 meeting.
