Heights' First Annual 5K Run Sunday

Boston marathon bombing victims will be remembered at start of ceremony

This Sunday the very first Hasbrouck Heights 5K run/walk and Health Fair will take place throughout the town.

By mid-week, 81 runners had already signed up for the run/walk according to Laurie French of the Health Department. Runners/walkers can also sign up the morning of the event.

The victims of the Boston Marathon bombing will be rememberd as part of the event Sunday morning. Father Ray Holmes of Corpus Christi Church will lead all in pray at 8:45 a.m., according to French.

The event is being held in part with the borough's Health Department annual Health Fair. The Board of Health and the borough's Junior Womans Club are co-sponsoring the event which will raise monies for scholarships the Juniors will present to graduating seniors. A portion will also be donated to the Seeing Eye charity.

The race route starts at Central Avenue and Oak Grove at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Fee for pre-registration is $20, $25 the day of the event and $15 for children under 18. Participants will receive a T-shirt and post-race refreshments will be provided.

The route will go south on Oak Grove from Central, east on Henry, north on Terrace to Lawrence, west on Lawrence to Oak Grove where runners/walkers will travel south to Central Avenue and down to Borough Hall at the Boulevard to reach the finish line.

Heights residents should expect road closings Sunday morning while the race is underway.

Medals will be awarded to the top three female and male runners in the following categories: Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female runners in the following categories: 18 and under, 19-29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49 and 50 and over.

While the 5K is underway the health department's annual Health Fair will take place in the Senior Center from 9 a.m. to noon. A total of 24 vendors have signed up to participate with samples, giveways, information and more, according to French.
