School District Report Card Shows Heights Has Above Average Class Size, Below Average Cost Per Pupil

NJ Department of Education releases district report cards for all school districts.

Hasbrouck Heights schools are considered somewhat above average in class size for most grades when compared with the state averages, and cost per pupil is found to be below the state average, according to the school report cards for the 2009-2010 school year which have just been released by the New Jersey Department of Education this week.

Each of the district schools – and elementary, , receives a report card which cites various facts per school and district such as cost per pupil, average class size, student/faculty ratio, and Cost per pupil
In Hasbrouck Heights the cost per pupil for the 2009-2010 school year was $14,329 which is below the state average of $15,538. The Heights district has remained below the state average for cost for pupil for the past three years. For the 2008-2009 school year the cost per pupil in Heights was $13,863 well below the state average of $15,221 and in 2007-2008 the cost per pupil was $14,328, below the state average of $14,805.

Student/faculty ratio
All four district schools are somewhat over the state average of number of students per faculty member. In the elementary school and middle school the average number of students per faculty member is 10.6 where as Lincoln School the average number is 15, up from 12.3 for the 2008-2009 school year. At Euclid School the average is 14.3 up from 12.2 in 2008-2009 school year. The average number of students per faculty member at the middle school is 13. It was 11.3 in 2008 to 2009. The high school has the smallest student/faculty ratio of 11.3, up from 10.8 in 2008-2009.

Average class size
Compared to the state average the Euclid School, K to grade 5, is in close range with the largest differences being kindergarten which on average has 21.7 students per class whereas the state is 15.9 and grade 5 which has an average of 23 students per class and the state average is 17.8. For Lincoln School, which is pre-K to 5, the average class size is similar to that of Euclid with the largest differences between the school and the state come in grades kindergarten and grade 5. Overall the largest difference in average class size comes at the pre-K level which has 21 students per class at Lincoln School and 12.5 for the state.

At the middle school (sixth, seventh and eighth grades), the average class size is 23.7. The largest difference when compared to state average class size comes at the grade 7 level. See chart below.

At the high school level, the grade with the small class size is grade 9 with 14.8 which is well below the state average of 19.5. Grades 10 to 12 are much like the other grades across the board with average class size in the 21 to 24 range.

Attendance rate
Attendance rate was high for all four schools and above state average of 94.6. Euclid has an attendance rate of 96.3; Lincoln - 96.0; 96.9 for the middle school and 95.5 for the high school.

Graduation rates
Hasbrouck Heights High School had a 100 percent graduation rate for the 2009-2010 year, well above the state average of 94.6 and higher than previous years of 93.5 for the 2008-2009 school year.

Sixty-three percent of the Class of 2010 pursued a four-year college after graduation, 25.9 percent pursued a two-year college; 1.9 percent went into the military, 0.9 percent pursued an other form of post-secondary schooling, another 0.09 percent sought employment and 7.4 percent were undecided.
