New column highlights news and information from various departments around town

Week to week Patch will provide updates and information from the various departments in the borough.

The has responded to six snow storms this season beginning with the Dec. 26, 2010 blizzard which dropped 24 inches of snow on the borough. The blizzard required 23 hours of plowing and two days and nights of snow removal, Councilman David Gonzalez reported at the recent mayor and council meeting.

The Jan. 7 storm dropped five more inches of snow requiring eight hours of plowing. The Jan. 11 storm brought another 10 inches of snow which required more snow removal on top of plowing. The fourth storm resulted in four inches of a mixture of snow and sleet.  DPW also responded to the six inches of snow from the Jan. 20 storm. On Jan. 27 the borough woke up to yet another 12 inches of snow and there was more snow and ice this week.

Bergen county has been billed $9,080 for the clean-up of county roads.

  • Tax department
    First quarter taxes were due this past Tuesday, Feb. 1. The borough’s tax office confirmed that taxpayers have up until Feb. 10 to submit payment.
  • Recycling
    The satellite recycling container will be in the Central Avenue lot from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 5. Also residents are reminded that recycling center hours are from 7 to 11 a.m. Monday to Friday and is closed Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
  • School district
    The Department of Special Services office will now be located in the office as of Monday, Feb. 7. The main phone number for the department will remain 201-393-8191. Kindergarten registration will take place Monday, Feb. 14 from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. in the Eglow Media Center, 365 Boulevard.
  • Recreation
    Recreation wrestling team will host the Hasbrouck Heights invitational tournament on Feb. 6 and Feb. 20. The youth basketball clinics for first and second grade girls and boys are taking place at 24 Hour Fitness.  Sign-ups for softball took place this week.
  • Police department
    The held its annual beefsteak dinner to benefit Special Olympics recently. More than 360 people attended. The department recently participated with the Euclid and Lincoln Schools anti-drug rallys. Sgt. Joseph Rinke worked with the fifth grade students in the DARE program. Students graduated the program on Jan. 13.
