Caldwell College to Offer Classes in Hoboken High School

Students interested in pursuing their Master of Arts in Literacy Instruction orReading Specialist Certification at Caldwell College can  take their courses at Hoboken High School in Hoboken, New Jersey beginning in September. 

"We are delighted to be able to offer our students another off-site location to further their education.  We know busy adults are juggling schedules and balancing family and work responsibilities and this will make it a little easier for some students to pursue additional professional credentials.  Plus, it is a great program with the same quality professors that teach on our Caldwell campus," said Dr. Lisa Di Bisceglie, Associate Dean, External Partnerships.

The Master of Arts in Literacy Instruction program is designed for K-12 certified classroom teachers who seek to improve and/or enhance their knowledge and skills in reading and writing instruction. Through the structure of the course offerings, this graduate literacy program is designed to balance the requirements and expectations of successful K-12 reading and writing development teachers.

The Master of Arts in Literacy Instruction, offered through the Caldwell College Division of Education, is a 30-credit program. Fifteen credits constitute the program's required core courses and candidates then choose a 15-credit concentration in either reading or writing from the elementary or secondary strands offered. Through selection of appropriate courses, students may also earn a New Jersey Reading Specialist certification.

This Masters in Literacy Instruction Program offers classroom teachers courses in the teaching of both reading and writing.  "Many teachers have had courses in the teaching of reading but few have had courses in the teaching of writing.  The NJ State Department of Education assesses both of these critical areas in grades three through eight and in eleventh grade as well.  Passing this test is a requirement for high school graduation," said Dr. Walter Cmielewski, Assistant Professor of Education.  Teachers who complete Caldwell College's literacy instruction masters will have the expertise to help students succeed on this state test and demonstrate that they are proficient readers and writers, said Dr. Cmielewski.
