The events unfolded on Saturday night when police in Kearny responded to a report of an injured man near the corner of Kearny and Johnson avenues. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office noted, "Officers located a male who appeared to have been struck by a pointed object."

Criollo was taken to University Hospital in Newark and died of his injuries.

Feijoo then barricaded himself in his home on Kearny Avenue, prosecutors said.

The county SWAT Team negotiated into the wee hours of Sunday morning, when a fire broke out in the home, prosecutors said.

The complaint says that Feijoo set fires on two floors of the home, causing an explosion.

On Sunday afternoon, "The fire was extinguished, and the male exited the home armed with knives," officials said.

Fundaiser For Dad

On Sunday, a GoFundMe was started for Criollo's family.

"As much pain as it causes me to write this," wrote Criollo's stepdaughter, "my step father, father of my 6 year old sister and my mother's partner Pablo Criollo was aimlessly murdered... Pablo came from Ecuador at the age of 16 to start a new life. I knew him for 10 years and through that he was my mother’s partner and provided for me like I was his own daughter. Pablo also fathered my little sister April who just recently started kindergarten and is excited for Christmas."

She added, "We’re seeking justice for this cruel act but at the same time we’re grieving. My family has lost their main source of income and don’t know how to make it through these upcoming days or months."

The fundraiser had amassed $33,000 by Tuesday.

Kearny's firefighters' union described the incident as "one that is typically only read about in training or mock scenarios."

"We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family affected by the horrifying incident that occurred yesterday," they wrote on social media on Sunday. "Our thoughts remain with them during this incredibly difficult time."
