City Launches Smart Card Parking, Announces Mixed Meter/Permit Parking Zones

Drivers can now pay for parking at all metered parking spots in Hoboken with refillable smart cards, the city announced Monday.

Paying for parking in Hoboken got more convenient Monday with the city's announcement that parking meter smart cards can now be used to pay at all parking meters citywide.

The new Hoboken Smart Cards, which are available for purchase at the Hoboken Parking Utility in values ranging from $20 to $240, can be recharged at any of the parking meters throughout the city that accept bills.

In addition to the rollout of refillable Hoboken Smart Cards, the Parking Utility also announced that it would soon launch a pilot program that creates mixed meter/permit parking regulations in northern Hoboken on Adams, Clinton, Grand, Jefferson and 15th streets.

The new hybrid zones, which take effect on July 1, will be designated with signs that read: "Permit Parking Only. All Others Pay At Meter," and are intended to benefit both residents and non-residents in their efforts to find parking.

“We hope this pilot program proves to be a win-win for residents and visitors alike,” Transportation and Parking Director John Morgan said in a statemnent. “The new rules preserve parking for residents and are more forgiving to our visitors.”

Hoboken parking permit holders may park in the hybrid zones at no charge, while visitors and other non-permit holders must pay at the meters between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., for up to four hours at a time.

The following streets will be subject to the new meter/permit regulations:

- 15th St from Madison St to Willow Ave (both sides)

- Adams St from 15th St to 16th St (East)

- Clinton St from 15th St to 16th St (East)

- Grand St from 15th St to 16th St (East)

- Jefferson St from 15th St to 16th St (East)

The west side of Adams, Clinton, Grand and Jefferson streets will remain designated as "Resident Only."
