Emergency Center Open, No Garbage Pick Up And Other Cancellations Due to Snowstorm [UPDATED]

Snow picked up on Friday afternoon. A serious winter storm was expected to blanket the area with about 10 inches of snow.

UPDATED Saturday, 1 p.m. — Hoboken saw few difficulties during Friday night's winter storm, which was a little less severe than initially expected.

The storm blanketed Hoboken with about 8 inches — according to the National Weather Service, nearby Jersey City saw about 5 inches, while central park got about 11 inches.

Garbage pick up was scheduled on Friday night because of the snow storm, but resumed normal service on Saturday.

New Jersey Transit resumed rail service at noon on Saturday, which had been shut off since 10 p.m. Friday night.

In preparation of the big snowstorm, the City of Hoboken opened an emergency center at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon that can be reached by calling 201-239-6647.

The city also cancelled garbage pick up on Friday afternoon, urging residents not to place their garbage on the curb.

City Spokesman Juan Melli said the city is taking the storm seriously.

A big winterstorm was expected to blanket the area with about 10 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. The worst of the storm was expected to kick in later on on Friday.

Residents were required to remove their cars from the city's snow routes. (a map of those routes is attached to this story).

Many events in the area were cancelled, including Friday night's performance of the High School's production of Rent.

All basketball games and practices on Friday and Saturday at Demarest, Wallace and the Multi Service Center were also cancelled.

Hoboken remained under a blizzard warning until Saturday early afternoon.

The 9 a.m. opening of ShopRite on Saturday morning was expected to go on, "rain or shine," according to spokeswoman Santina Stankevich.
