Fatal Fire Site In Hoboken Will Become Supermarket: City Gives Updates
What's happening with the proposed supermarket in Hoboken's southwest corner? The city has changed the time for an upcoming meeting.

HOBOKEN, NJ — A fire raged through a building full of artists and small businesses in Hoboken's southwest corner in 2022, killing two people. Three years later, developers plan to redevelop the former factory as a school and supermarket.
Now the city must consider proposed changes to the Redevelopment Agreement.
A community meeting has been scheduled to discuss these changes at 38 Jackson St. and answer questions from the public, but the time of the meeting has changed.

The March 12 meeting was originally scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. at Connors Elementary School a few blocks away, at 201 Monroe St. But because of a conflict with a public safety meeting to be held uptown from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the meeting has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m., said city spokesperson Marilyn Baer on Thursday.
"The CAPS [safety] meeting begins at 6 p.m. with public safety presentations that last about 30 minutes and then goes into Q&A," Baer said, "so people can still attend both meetings."

The 38 Jackson St. meeting is for residents "to learn more about proposed changes to the 38 Jackson Street Redevelopment Agreement. The developer team will present proposed changes to the ground floor including new proposed school space and a revised location for a supermarket, as well as answering questions from the public."
The city noted, "This meeting is a follow-up to the community meeting held at the same location on January 14, where the proposed changes to the redevelopment agreement were first discussed. The Southwest Hoboken Redevelopment Plan, initially adopted in May 2017, serves as the framework for this project."
The redevelopment agreement between the City of Hoboken and 38 Jackson, LLC was executed in January 2022, with initial Planning Board approval granted in September 2022. An amended site plan approval was subsequently granted by the Planning Board in May 2023, the city said.
The project is scheduled to be completed later this year.
