HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken streets reopened Thursday night after flooding amid a coastal storm.

At least one flood gate failed to open when a frequently flooded corner — Eight Street and Willow Avenue — was under water at 3:30 p.m.

Even some uptown streets that usually remain dry were seen flooding or puddling, thanks, in part, to newly fallen leaves that clogged sewers:

City officials had said in the past that more than 0.8 inches of rain in an hour could cause flooding. A heavy downpour occurred just before the high tide, which occurred at 3:38 p.m.

The city of Hoboken issued an alert at 3:22 p.m. saying, "Barricades have been deployed. Do not walk or drive around barricades or through flooded areas. Do not attempt to drive around lowered gates."

They asked residents to report flooded intersections and clogged drain inlets by calling the Sewerage Authority Hotline at (866) 689-3970.

At 5:43 p.m. the city sent a text alert: "Avoid southwest Hoboken; Grove St. & Sinatra Dr. closed; Do not move barricades."

Just before 8 p.m., the Office of Emergency Management posted on social media, "Grove Street [at the Hoboken/Jersey City border] has reopened, as have most previously barricaded streets in the southwest, as floodwaters have primarily receded ... thank you all for your patience."
