Hoboken's Historic Cobblestone Road: How Should It Be Rehabbed? Virtual Meeting Thursday

HOBOKEN, NJ — How do you restore a century-old Belgian block road without destroying the look and historical features?

A century ago, Hoboken's semi-hidden alley, Court Street, contained rows of horse stables, which have since been converted to garages. Stores and restaurants on the Main Street of Washington Street — including the famous Carlo's Bakery ("Cake Boss" on TV) — back up to the narrow road.

Hoboken is planning a rehabilitation project for Court Street, and is soliciting public input at a Zoom meeting scheduled for Thursday night.

At the meeting, you can find out more about the road and the city's plans for it.

Contractors expect to finalize the design and get permits by June and begin construction this October.

The city says, "Court Street was laid out in 1804 by Col. John Stevens [steam locomotive inventor and Hoboken's founder] as part of the original city plan, and was likely paved with stone setts from local quarries in the late 1800s."
