Icy Conditions Close Hoboken Roads, Injure Residents

The City is urging residents to stay inside, as locals report slip and falls on icy sidewalks and roads close throughout Hoboken.

Hoboken officials are urging residents to stay inside today, as freezing rain has created treacherous conditions throughout the Mile Square.

The City has received numerous reports of people slipping and falling on sidewalks this morning. Salt trucks have been deployed, but slippery sidewalks and streets continue pose a thread, a rep for the City said in a statement today.

“Please stay indoors or be extremely careful if you go outside this morning,” a rep from the City stated. “There have been many people slipping and falling on sidewalks this morning.”

NJ Transit bus service in north Jersey is not operating at this time due to icy road conditions. Sinatra Drive and the 14th Street Viaduct are temporarily closed to traffic.

NJ Transit has instituted a systemwide cross-honoring of rail, light rail and bus passes/tickets today due to the extreme weather conditions, the City reports. In addition, the speed for the entire length of the NJ Turnpike has been restricted to 35 mph.

The National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory, saying freezing rain will lead to ice accumulations.

A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain soaked the region on Sunday morning, and will return on Sunday night and Monday morning.

There were 231 accidents and 103 “aids” reported by the State Police between midnight and 10 a.m.
