Martin Luther King Day in Hoboken

A concert will take place at All Saints Episcopal School at 4 p.m. Monday.

Today is the day America—and thus, Hoboken—celebrates one of its most important civil rights leaders: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In Hoboken, the biggest celebration will take place at 4 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal School for the Sing Out For Justice concert and an exhibit.

The mayor and other civic leaders will be in attendance. Hoboken's elementary school students and many other members of the community will be performing.

Another celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. took place on Friday when roughly 500 Hoboken charter (and some public) school students marched on Washington Street, holding up colorful signs promoting justice and singing civil rights songs.

S.K. Duff, director of service learning at Hoboken Charter School, led the march on Washington Street on Friday. He said the march—which was the biggest since the first one in 1999 — is a community event, just like this afternoon's concert.

"It sets what we want our community to be," Duff said.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) was honored Friday night by the Jubilee Center, an institution that is founded on King's beliefs.

Another community initiative is an essay competition for the students of Connors Primary School, which is being organized by Housing Authority Commissioner Jake Stuiver.
