Primary Election, City Summer Series Kick Off This Week in Hoboken

Let us help you plan your week.

In Tuesday's only contested primary race with a local running, Hoboken Housing Authority executive director Carmelo Garcia vies for one of the open 33rd District State Assembly seats.

Garcia, who is running on the Hudson County Democratic Line with Jersey City Deputy Mayor Raj Mukherji, faces a challenge from "Democrats for Change" candidates John Hilt IV and Anthony Mills, and Peter Basso, a "Hudson County Progressive Democrats" selection.

Councilman-at-large Ravi Bhalla is also on the ballot for State Assembly, but withdrew from the race last month after a legal attempt to remove Garcia from the ballot failed.

Other than Tuesday's primary, this week also marks the kick off of a number of Hoboken's summer series.

Family Fun Nights, a weekly City of Hoboken initiative, starts Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a performance by the Hey-Ya Brothers, a two-man slapstick comedy variety show. Family Fun Nights will be held every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Shipyard Park, located at 13th Street and McFeeley Drive.

Another free city series, Concerts in the Park, begins Thursday with a 7 p.m. performance by Hoboken Public Schools music students. The outdoor music series runs through August on every Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Amphitheater at Sinatra Park, located on Frank Sinatra Drive between 4th and 5th streets.

Also on Thursday, the Hoboken Uptown Farmers’ Market will open at the corner of 13th and Hudson streets — earlier than in year's past due to customer demand — and run through October on every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Residents who would like to pay their respects to long-time city employee Freddie Moret, who died unexpectedly while vacationing in Italy on May 24, can attend the visitation on Monday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and the funeral on Tuesday at 10 a.m., both held at St. Francis Church.

The Hoboken City Council's regular Wednesday night meeting will be preceded by a closed session special meeting to discuss various litigation.
