HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — As part of its ongoing roadwork, Hudson County plans to close the Park Avenue Bridge between Hoboken and Weehawken on Friday and Monday, the city of Hoboken said Thursday evening.

This didn't sit well with uptown Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher, who sent a newsletter Thursday saying, "WTF?"

She noted that, "If that isn't bad enough, Observer Highway at Henderson Street will also be closed tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. clogging up our Southern gateway area as well at the same time. So travel early or late to avoid the headaches."

Could Have Been Overnight?

"The fact that we are closing main arterial roads in and out of Hoboken during peak travel times is unacceptable. We could have planned this better for Hoboken residents. This work could have been done overnight or midweek. I have spoken to County representatives and other stakeholders involved in approving the Park Ave project scope and learned that while Weehawken's Mayor and administration put their residents' interests first by prohibiting disruptive overnight work. Hoboken's administration did not provide the same input and service to our residents, resulting in a significant quality of life issue for our community. Hoboken residents deserve better."

The closure will likely affect New York buses and traffic at the northern end of the city, as well as in Weehawken.

The bridge is less than a mile from the Lincoln Tunnel.

Below is Hoboken's message from Thursday night:

Park Avenue Bridge To Close

Please be advised, Hudson County will close the Park Avenue Bridge for their ongoing Paving Project tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 2, from approximately 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Monday, Aug. 5, from approximately 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Park Avenue Bridge spans over Harbor Boulevard from 16th Street to 19th Street to connect Park Avenue in Hoboken to John F. Kennedy Boulevard East in Weehawken.

The closure of the bridge, and other sections of Park Avenue in the area, will likely cause congestion coming into and out of Hoboken on the northern end of the City. Detours will be in place and Willow Avenue will be open in both directions as an alternate route.

The North Hudson Sewer Authority test pitting also continues on Friday, Aug. 2, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Observer Highway will be closed at Henderson Street during working hours.

Hoboken Police will be at both sites to assist with detours, traffic control, and pedestrian safety. Drivers should leave extra travel time and consider alternate routes to and from Hoboken on Friday and Monday.
