Upscale Men's Barbershop Opens on Washington Street

Roosters MGC, a fast-growing national men's grooming chain, has opened a shop in Hoboken on Washington Street.

Roosters, a rapidly growing chain of men's grooming centers that pairs a personal barbershop touch with modern style offerings and swank decor, opened Tuesday in Hoboken.

The Hoboken storefront, located at 610 Washington St., is the company's third New Jersey location and, according to store owner Jonathan Shafer, the only Roosters Men's Grooming Center in the country located in such an historic setting.

“We look forward to becoming a destination place for families, singles and young people walking by to discover the type of services we offer," said Shafer, who researched the Roosters brand extensively and spoke with store owners across the country before deciding to become a franchisee.

“Roosters had a special appeal because of its focus on providing excellent customer service to a largely underserved population," he said. "We felt that Hoboken was the perfect location to open an upscale barbershop for men who wanted an experience above and beyond a basic haircut. Roosters is that perfect combination of luxury and excellent service at a reasonable price for Hoboken’s discriminating residents.”

Deborah Potvin, one of four barbers and stylists currently employed at the Hoboken Roosters, described the barbershop as a certifiable "man cave."

During haircuts, customers are seated in oversized leather barber chairs in one of seven wood-paneled stations and treated to complimentary shoe shines and beverages. A New York Jets helmet is prominently displayed in the waiting area and a large flat screen television mounted to the back barbershop wall is tuned to ESPN.

A standard Roosters haircut, which includes a shampoo massage and hot-towel treatment, will set you back $36. Boys ages 12 and under can get a basic cut for exactly half that.

The Hoboken store is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday and Friday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Walk-ins are welcome.

Roosters MGC in Hoboken will hold a grand opening celebration on Wednesday, Aug. 14 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with refreshments, prize drawings, entertainment and hair care demonstrations.
