Besides voting for mayor, Hoboken residents can cast their votes for up to three council-at-large candidates, representing all of town on the nine-member Hoboken City Council. Mayoral candidates often pick a ticket of three council candidates to run with, but voters don't have to pick all three from the same ticket.
Since 6th Ward Councilwoman Jennifer Giattino passed away last year, her spot, representing the center of town, is also up for election.
The six ward council seats will be up for election in 2027.
What's The Salary?
Mayor Ravi Bhalla has said he will not run again, as he is running for New Jersey Assembly in November instead.
The person who replaces him will start at a salary of $130,000, plus benefits. The spot is full-time.
Hoboken council members are part-time and earn a starting salary of $35,000. The council president and vice president earn $40,000 and $37,500, respectively.
How To Run
To run for mayor or council, candidates must get 100 signatures from registered voters and have lived in Hoboken for at least a year. The signatures must be turned in to the Hoboken City Clerk's office by 4 p.m. on the deadline day. Political opponents often challenge the validity of signatures, so candidates usually submit extra.
Candidates running this year for 6th Ward, to replace Jennifer Giattino, must collect 50 valid signatures.
