HOBOKEN, NJ — Several major issues are up for a vote at the Hoboken City Council meeting on Wednesday night, including a 1,300-unit development and a matter related to immigrant protections.
Mayor Ravi Bhalla said Tuesday that he will ask the council to vote to codify a resolution passed in 2018 to designate Hoboken as a "Fair and Welcoming City" for immigrants.
The eight-member City Council will vote on the proposed Hoboken Trust Act, which a city spokesperson said.

The city said that the ordinance will comply with current state law, and passing it could help if state policy is rescinded by a future governor.
"The ordinance reinforces the city’s support for New Jersey’s Immigrant Trust Directive, issued by the State Attorney General, which limits the role of local law enforcement in federal immigration enforcement," said a spokesperson. "Though upheld in court after being challenged by the Trump administration, the directive remains an executive policy that could be rescinded by a future governor. Mayor Bhalla called on the New Jersey Legislature to adopt the Immigrant Trust Act to codify these protections statewide and encouraged other municipalities to pass similar local legislation."

The ordinance would be up for introduction. It would go to a hearing and final vote at a future meeting.

1,301-Unit Building
After years of litigation and debate over the size of a development proposed for 1200-1330 Madison St., the city will have the opportunity to vote on a developer's plan to put 1,301 units of housing there. Approximately 10 percent will be affordable housing.
The council will vote on whether to execute an amended Redevelopment Agreement with Hoboken Western Edge, LLC, for the Redevelopment of the property, which falls within the Western Edge Redevelopment Area.
