Hazlet Announces 9/11 Memorial Ceremony Plans

The 20th anniversary of the attacks on the twin towers will be marked with a ceremony. See here how to attend.

HAZLET, NJ — For the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Hazlet Township is holding a candlelight commemoration at the end of the day.

Participants will gather at the gazebo in Veterans Park, near the pond, at 1776 Union Avenue, beginning at 6:45 p.m. Entrance should be made through Green Acres Drive.

The service is expected to begin around 7:30 p.m. There will be live music and prayers.

At dusk, candles will be distributed and lighted and the names of people from Hazlet who lost their lives will be read.

Seating is limited so those planning to attend are welcome to bring their own chairs. The tribute will be held rain or shine.

After the ceremony, there will be a quiet walk towards the township's 9/11 memorial.

Participating in the event will be the Hazlet Police Department, Chaplain and Honor Guard, Hazlet First Aid, Hazlet Fire Department and the Raritan High School Marching Band.

Later in the day, the Monmouth County shoreline will light up with cellphones from residents and elected officials.

The plan is to get everyone to turn on their lights at 8:46 p.m, honoring "the heroes" of Sept.11, 2001.

The Board of County Commissioners is also inviting families of Monmouth County 9/11 victims to attend a Memorial Ceremony at 8 a.m. at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook, at 460 Ocean Boulevard, Atlantic Highlands.
