UPDATE: Hazlet Child Refuses Ride from Stranger, Police Located Alleged Suspect

The suspect drove off, and the incident wasn't reported to police until 6:30 p.m.

Update as of 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 11:  Hazlet Police reported on its Facebook page that the subject in Tuesday's incident has come forward and the incident appears to be a mistake. After being interviewed by investigators, it has been determined the incident is a misunderstanding.

Hazlet Police are looking for four-door light blue sedan driven by a white male, after a 10-year-old reported the man offered him a ride during his walk home from school.

According to the Hazlet Police Department, at 3:30 p.m. on Monterey Drive a white male between the ages of 40 and 55 with brownish-grey hair, facial hair and sunburned skin stopped to ask the 10-year-old if he needed a ride. The child replied "No, you're a stranger."

The suspect drove off, and the incident wasn't reported to police until 6:30 p.m. Police said extra patrols are in the area and the incident remains under investigation.

"We ask that all parents review with their children the proper response in these situations. Obviously the child involved in this incident knew the correct thing to do when approached by a stranger," police said.
