HOLMDEL, NJ — In Holmdel, the Save Holmdel Schools slate was leading last night in unofficial results but other candidates are awaiting mail-in ballot results that they say may change the vote tallies.

Eight candidates filed to run for three spots on the Board of Education and several candidates identified as slates, emphasizing different issues.

Save Holmdel Schools included candidate Chris DiMare, who formed Save Holmdel this summer in response to the referendum on a government change. His running mates were Jeff Mann and John Buckley. Save Holmdel Schools was particularly critical of the state-mandated health education curriculum that included certain sex education elements.

As of 11 p.m. that slate was ahead, with DiMare, 2,828; Mann, 2,608; and Buckley, 2,650.

Another slate, Education First, included Joanne Lam, Alicia Unusan and Mathew Weisfeld. Unofficial votes as of 10 p.m. were: Lam, 2,454; Unusan, 2,242; Weisfeld, 2,396.

Weisfeld said his slate is optimistic and is awaiting mail-in votes for the official count.

Incumbent Elizabeth Urbanski sought re-election, but was not connected to a slate. She is the current school board president and was the only incumbent seeking re-election. She had 815 votes.

Deborah Wilson, an educator in Freehold Township, was running individually on a motto of School Community Advocacy. She had 799 votes as of 11 p.m.

Academic excellence and school security were common issues among all the candidates.
