Holmdel Police Warn Of Phone Scam

If any residents receive a phone call for money for a supposed police cause, it is a scam, Holmdel police said in an alert Thursday.

HOLMDEL, NJ — Police here say a resident reported that they were contacted by someone claiming to be a representative of the "Holmdel PBA," asking for donations over the phone.

The Holmdel Township Police Department/PBA will never solicit donations over the phone or by email, police said.

"Please do not fall prey to this scam," police urged.

The Federal Trade Commission has advice on how to be aware of scams. Scammers can rig caller ID to look like they’re calling from the police department, the agency said. Scammers can easily "spoof" it to try to gain your trust.

But do not give out personal or financial information, the FTC says, and call the local non-emergency police number to report the matter. In Holmdel, the non-emergency number is 732-946-4400.
