Star Student Athlete: Hazlet's Tommy 'Makes Others Feel Special'
We all know athletes who shine whether they're competing or not. Let's help share these amazing stories!

HAZLET, NJ — We all know student athletes who also bring their A-game to other parts of their lives.
Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know the individual stories behind the leaderboard.
This submission comes from Katie who nominated her son Tommy. Tommy is not only a naturally gifted athlete, but connects with his community through coaching and volunteer activities, Katie says.

Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?
Tommy has been an exceptional human since the day he was born. He is blessed with athletic skill and strength, but more importantly, he is blessed with a wonderful, caring and empathetic spirit.
Now a high school junior, he spends his afternoons and evenings working hard on the football field and in the gym. But on the weekends, he spends quality time with his family, telling jokes and making us all smile.
He also volunteers as an assistant coach for the local Hazlet Youth Athletic League's (HYAL) 7U flag football team. Many times, after a big varsity game, Tommy will take the time to high-five or take pictures with the young athletes from HYAL, who look up to him as a mentor.
He is currently enrolled in his high school's early childhood development program, with the goal to connect with and teach pre-k students. He truly has a gift when it comes to making these young ones feel special and seen.
He also spends the holiday season volunteering at the RAINE foundation, where he helps collect, organize and deliver toys for local families in need.
As an underclassman athlete, he has been part of the Rockets varsity team since his sophomore year. Now as a junior and OL/DL player, he is considered a leader of his team. He received the award as overall MVP of his freshman team as well, an honor not regularly presented to a lineman.
His parents, his teachers and his coaches are all continually amazed and his ability to connect with his classmates and his community.
What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?
Tommy is a young man who truly cares about his friends and family. He is everyone's friend and goes out of his way to make others feel special.
Keep up the great work, Tommy!
