Police Tase, Shoot Man In Route 35 Carjacking In Holmdel: Reports

Unofficial reports say a man was injured, hospitalized after a carjacking in Holmdel. Route 35 in Holmdel still partially closed.

HOLMDEL, NJ — A person was shot by Holmdel police in an early morning carjacking played out of Route 35 in Holmdel, according to reports.

According to sources for News 12 New Jersey, a "crisis patient" who was being discharged from a hospital was first tased then shot by police after stealing and crashing two vehicles. Sources told the television station that the incident began outside Bayshore Hospital in Holmdel when a white delivery van was left running.

According to the news station, the patient got out of the hospital, jumped into the van and crashed it into the median near Navesink River Road in Middletown. A good Samaritan stopped to help the driver of the van.

According to the News 12 report, sources say the driver stole the good Samaritan's vehicle and drove north on Route 35, crashing between Laurel and Union avenues where police intercepted the driver.

Meanwhile, Route 35 is still partially closed in Holmdel because of the incident.

"Route 35 is closed and detoured in both directions between Union Avenue/Centerville Road and Laurel Avenue in Holmdel," the state Department of Transportation said in an update.

In addition, only a single lane is open on Route 35 at CR12A/Navesink River Road in Middletown, Monmouth County, the DOT said.

The closures are expected to last through the day. Motorists are advised to avoid the area, DOT said.

Authorities have not yet released an official report of the incident.

The incident also caused a power outage to about 900 people according to JCP&L spokesman Chris Hoening, but he said that has now been reduced to 6 customers as of 9 a.m.

Earlier, NJ. 101.5, quoting Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden, reported that police fired shots on Route 35 after a stolen vehicle crashed and the driver attacked two people on Wednesday morning and two people were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center following the incident, the report said.

The incident started with a report of a motor vehicle fire on Route 35 in Holmdel that prompted commuting delays in the area Wednesday morning, authorities said.

As of 7:09 a.m., there was police department activity and a vehicle fire on Rt. 35 in both directions from Union Avenue to CR 516/South Laurel Avenue in Holmdel, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

"Avoid the highways if possible this morning," Hazlet police said in a statement Wednesday morning. "Plan ahead and leave early to get to work on time. We are assisting our neighboring departments the best we can to help get things moving smoothly. Please be patient as we all are navigating this messy morning together."

Route 36 is also closed northbound at Middle Road towards the Garden State Parkway, Hazlet Township said in a Nixle alert around 7 a.m. on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear if the two closures are related.
