"During the encounter, the occupant exited the vehicle (and) was struck once by police fire," officials said. "The occupant’s firearm was discharged as well during the encounter and that firearm was recovered."
Officials said that someone called 911 at 3:30 p.m., but did not specify the exact reason. The woman and the involved officers have not been identified at this time.
In a social media post, New Jersey State PBA president Peter Andreyev asked for people to pray for the involved officers. A representative told New Jersey Advance Media that the officers were being seen for trauma.
Byram Mayor Alex Rubenstein urged the public to wait for official information to come out about the shooting, as he also asked the community to keep township police employees in their thoughts.
"We are limited in what we can say at this time," he said Monday night. "However, we can say that all of our officers are safe and there is absolutely no threat to the public in any regard."
