The patrolman leaped into the icy water "without hesitation," according to police.

SPARTA, NJ — A police officer lent a helping hand to a dog in need recently, saving it from what could’ve been an icy disaster.
Recently, concerned citizens called Sparta police to report that a dog had fallen through the ice on Lake Mohawk near Rainbow Trail.
That’s when Sparta Patrolman Michael Poon showed up with ice rescue gear and sprang into action.

Poon crawled his way to the middle of the lake to help the struggling canine. Then, “without hesitation,” he jumped into the freezing water to boost the dog up onto solid ice.
Both Poon and the dog were able to make it safely back to land, police said.

“We are incredibly grateful for Ptl. Poon’s courage and dedication, and we also want to thank the concerned citizens who immediately contacted us to report the dog in distress,” a Sparta police post read. “Your quick action truly made a difference.”
Sparta police used the incident as a reminder of the dangers of ice, saying ice conditions can change rapidly and are “often unpredictable.”
“Please use caution around frozen bodies of water and help us keep everyone safe—people and animals alike," police said.
