Over the weekend, blue tape was placed between the yellow lines on Main Street, Sparta Police Chief Ernest Reigstad said.

SPARTA, N.J.– Over the Thanksgiving weekend, blue tape was placed between the yellow lines on Main Street – representing the "Thin Blue Line" – while sign thanking officers were hung at the Sparta municipal building.

Police Chief Ernest Reigstad expressed thanks for the gesture.

"I would first like to express how touched our officers were by this show of support and thank you very much for all the effort that went in to this heartfelt display," he said. "It means a great deal to all of us."

Despite respecting the good deed, there was a caveat.

"However," the chief added, "we are concerned by the potential danger that people put themselves in to carry out this show of support.

"We would never want to see someone hurt trying to do something good for us," Reigstad continued. "In the future, we would ask that you make prior arrangements with me before conducting any activity in the roadway. We can keep it safe and still surprise our police officers."
