Woman Shot By Police Near NJ Boy Scout Camp Faces Weapons Charges

Authorities say the 31-year-old, who remains hospitalized, exchanged gunfire with officers in a wooded area Monday.

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ — A New Jersey woman faces multiple weapons charges after an incident near a Boy Scout camp this week that led police officers to shoot her, officials said.

Rachael Noviskey of Hackettstown has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, pointing a firearm at a law enforcement officer, and possession of hollow point bullets. As of Friday, she remained in stable condition in a local hospital.

The 31-year-old was parked at the intersection of Camp Wheeler Road and Camp Allamuchy Road, where a 911 caller had directed police, on Monday afternoon. Responding officers encountered her alone in her vehicle with a firearm, the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office said.

Police and a trained crisis negotiator tried to talk with Noviskey and "deescalate" the situation, officials said. Efforts were unsuccessful and at some point, she got out of the vehicle and exchanged gunfire with officers, according to the the prosecutor's office.

An officer shot Noviskey once, and first responders later took her to Hackettstown Medical Center for treatment, authorities said. Officials recovered the firearm, which the prosecutor's office later said was a Kahr K9 pistol.

Several police officers were transported to a separate hospital for evaluation but had not been shot, according to officials.

The Morris County Prosecutor's Office will be the designated agency to investigate the police use of force, as designated by the New Jersey Attorney General.
