Door-To-Door Real Estate Solicitations Without Permits Illegal In Howell, Officials Remind

People without permits have been knocking on residents' doors asking them to list their homes for sale, which is banned in Howell.

HOWELL, NJ — Howell Township officials are urging residents to make sure they are on the town's "Do Not Knock" list after receiving reports about unlicensed people trying to solicit real estate listings by going door-to-door.

Howell officials posted a notice on the town's Facebook page, warning that the practice is illegal.

"We have been hearing reports of unlicensed persons canvassing and soliciting residents in Howell in order to obtain listings of real estate, or to bring about the sale, lease, or purchase of real estate," officials said.

"Howell passed an ordinance in 2022 prohibiting exactly that type of behavior. The ordinance is found in Chapter 223 of Howell’s code," the notice said.

Officials said anyone violating the ordinance should be reported to the township so the police department can investigate and issue summonses.

"Any Howell resident who hasn’t already done so should sign up for the 'Do Not Knock' registry," the notice said.

The form is available on the Township website by clicking the “Applications and Forms” link.
