Author Kicks Off Book Tour With a 'Twist'

Jefferson resident penned 'magbook' based on her online magazine.

Soft music, cupcakes and punch and chats with other women sound like the perfect beginning for a girls’ night out. Throw in a newly released book and the author on hand to sign it, and the setting is complete.

Jefferson resident Susan Vernicek brought that setting to life on Tuesday night as she kicked off the “book tour with a twist” for the magbook based on her online magazine, Identity.

“A magbook is part magazine, part book,” Vernicek said. “You won’t find the word in the dictionary yet. It takes time for official acceptance of a word.”

Identity magazine’s mission is to empower women to “accept, appreciate and achieve.” The book tour took that mission into account. Participants drank mocktails and munched on cupcakes provided by Alex’s Icing on the Cake, as Vernicek chatted with them and asked participants to fill out a short journal based on the “Identity 5,” five questions that Vernicek uses during her interactions with women.

“These questions are the essence of the tour,” Vernicek said.

She invited the participants to post answers to any of the questions on Identity’s site, and noted that they could be anonymous if the writers chose.

“It’s a more personal and conversational way of writing,” Vernicek said. “Maybe something you’ve written can help other women. And you’ll never have to give your name if you don’t want to.”

Books were available for sale, and each participant left with a goody bag.
