Breaking Up With Mountain Dew Is Hard To Do

The Diet Diaries—Week 1

Welcome to the first week of the Diet Diaries. The competition started on Saturday, and, as promised, I’m going to here on Jefferson Patch.

The group of contestants braved both the rain and the scale on Saturday, and, at least in my case, neither was very kind.

I guess I expected what the scale would say, not that this realization makes the number any easier to handle. But the past is the past, and now it’s time to look ahead. So that’s what I’m doing.

Sunday was day one of trying to take on healthier habits. And first on my list is parting ways with Mountain Dew.

I wouldn’t exactly call my relationship with Mountain Dew an addiction, but I suppose it’s close. It’s my source of caffeine (I don’t like coffee) and I truly enjoy the taste. But at 170 calories per can, it’s not exactly in the plan for now—and probably not ever. Those calories, multiplied by many, many cans, have more than likely had a negative effect on that scale number I mentioned earlier.

Day one wasn’t too terrible. I did have one can, but didn’t finish it. There was probably about a quarter of the can left when I dumped it down the sink.

They—whoever “they” are—say you should try and work on improving one bad habit at a time. However, since this competition is only seven weeks long, I don’t have the luxury of time to do that. So in addition to breaking the Mountain Dew “thing,” I will be working on exercising and portion control as well.

I’ll keep you posted. If you have any tips, ideas, favorite healthy recipes, encouragement, etc. for me, please feel free to share in the comment section.
