The children of Jefferson Township will have a more beautiful place to play, thanks to Cadet Girl Scout troop 779. The troop, comprised of 10 seventh grade girls, earned its Silver Award by overhauling the Creative Playground near the library and police station.
Each girl spent 50 hours working on the project, the required amount to obtain the Silver Award.
“We researched ideas from other playgrounds, and then met with Grace Rhinesmith of the recreation department to present our ideas,” said troop leader Mary Anzano.

Once the idea was approved, the girls spent time fundraising and writing speeches asking local companies to donate supplies.
Then the project began with picking up litter, raking leaves, painting and replacing broken swings and climbing chains.

Finally, the day came to officially open the new playground. The troop hosted an opening ceremony, attended by Sue Elam, one of the original organizers, Mayor Russell Felter and the township council.
Troop 779 would like to thank Headley Lumber and Monahan Paint for donating supplies, fire company #1 for bringing a truck, fire company #2 for bringing Dalmatians, and the mayor and council for attending the ceremony.
