Jefferson: A Township Full Of History, Nature And Good Eats

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Jefferson so special.

Jefferson is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Jefferson has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Did you know that Jefferson is named in honor of the former United States President Thomas Jefferson? The Township, which spans 44 square miles, was formed on Feb. 11, 1804.
  • For history buffs, the Jefferson Township Museum is a must-see. It's housed in the restored George Chamberlain House and features exhibits on local history, including farming, industry and lifestyles of those living in the township during the 1800s.
  • The Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum is another great destination for learning about the area's past. It's located in a 19th-century train station and showcases artifacts and memorabilia from the Lake Hopatcong region.
  • Love the great outdoors? Jefferson has plenty of options for hiking, biking and fishing. Head to Mahlon Dickerson Reservation for trails that wind through forests and over streams, or hit up Lake Hopatcong for some of the best fishing in the state.
  • If you're looking for something more laid back, consider spending an afternoon at the Jefferson Diner. This local landmark has been serving up classic diner fare since 1985 and has been featured on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”
  • Jefferson is home to Camp Jefferson, a recreational facility that features sports fields, a playground and a beach area with a swimming lake. It's a popular spot for family picnics and outdoor activities.
  • With a population of 20,538 according to the 2020 Census, Jefferson is a vibrant and diverse community that boasts over 25 unique communities, each with its own distinct character and charm. These neighborhoods are spread out across a picturesque landscape and include Cozy Lake, Lake Hopatcong and White Rock, among others.
  • The Jefferson Township Community Chorus is a local group that performs concerts throughout the year, including holiday shows and summertime outdoor performances. New members are always welcome!
  • Jefferson is located near several popular ski resorts, including Mountain Creek and Shawnee Mountain. Hit the slopes in the winter or take a scenic chairlift ride in the summer.
  • Locals never miss the annual Jefferson Township Day celebration! This event takes place every July and features live music, food vendors, carnival rides and a fireworks display. It's a great way to experience the community spirit and pride of Jefferson.
  • Each year, the Recreation Department in Jefferson organizes a festive celebration during the holiday season, complete with a tree lighting ceremony and a special appearance by Santa. In addition, the department partners with a private group annually to provide a chilling "Haunted House" encounter and runs a summer day camp catering to children.
  • The township is served by the Jefferson Township Public School District, which includes five elementary schools, one middle schoo, and one high school. The district is known for its strong academic programs and extracurricular activities.
