One Trail Open, More to Come, Mayor Says

The first of what Jefferson Township Mayor Russell Felter hopes will be many trails opened at the basketball courts on Prospect Point Road earlier this week. The plan is to break ground for the next part of that trail sometime in October.

“The trail that’s open now is .8 miles, so it’s a 1.6-mile round trip walk,” Felter said. “It’s a nice straight trail, about nine feet wide, with stone and stone dust. It’s a great trail for both walking and biking.”

The next part of the trail will continue through the woods and down to the beach at Prospect Point. It will be about four feet wide, and a bit more hilly, according to Felter, and more appropriate for walking.

Felter and the trails committee he started in spring 2011 are working on getting directories, maps and signs posted at the trails, as well as benches.

“We have some scouts in town who are looking for projects, so I will probably talk to some of them about adding benches and signs,” he said.

The township also plans to post signs with park rules and hours, and also will post notices banning hunting and ATV riding on the trails.

“We really want to get people interested in walking and being outdoors,” Felter said. “We’re providing a beautiful safe natural environment for people to use.”
