QB Reese Sets School Record With 5 TD Passes

Move over Gavin McCarney—there’s a new gunslinger in J-Town.

Junior J.R. Reese threw for five touchdown passes—three to senior Danny Brown—Friday night in the Jefferson High football team's 34-12 win over Dover, breaking McCarney's record of four TDs in one game set in 2010.

“I was excited to know that I did it,” Reese said in his typically understated manner. “I didn’t know about it until the next morning.”

Reese, the son of New York Giants General Manager, Jerry Reese, threw his first touchdown pass on Friday on an 8-yard slant to Brown in the first quarter.

His second touchdown came on a 54-yard heave also to Brown in the second quarter. Reese also connected with junior Vinny Ginefra off a faked field goal in the third quarter and then he hit Brown again for a 20-yard score later in the quarter. Reese set the record in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard pass to junior Kyle Neuschatz.

Falcon head coach Joe Mattessich said he wasn’t able to tell Reese about his record until the next morning because he had to check the record books.

“I knew how many Reese had by the end of the night, but I had to check and make sure McCarney had only had four,” Mattessich said.

“J.R. was pretty cool when I told him,” he continued. “Nothing fazes him, good or bad, which is really what you want in your quarterback.”

Reese’s receivers were glad they could help out their friend and teammate.

“It’s great playing with J.R," Brown said. "He always knows where you’ll be and finds you."

“He’s always on the money,” Neuschatz said. “We all know how the others play. We have chemistry.”

Ginefra was happy for Reese, but a little relieved for himself as well.

“Coach has been riding me because I missed a pass in the first game that I should have caught,” he said. “I’m just glad I didn’t do that again.”

Jefferson (2-1) next faces winless Parsippany High (0-3) on Friday night.

“They haven’t scored a touchdown yet this year,” Brown said. “We don’t want their first one to be against us.”
