Schedules and Emotions Hinder Healthy Eating

Welcome to week two of the Diet Diaries.

A crazy schedule was the cornerstone of my eating this week, but I still managed to lose. At the end of week two of the Biggest Loser competition, I’m down two more pounds, for a total of 3.4 over two weeks.

Besides the usual juggling act of balancing the schedules of three active teenagers, this week handed me a lot of evening events to cover for Jefferson Patch, including the school board elections on Wednesday. And since I moved this column from its usual Monday spot to Tuesday, I can also say that covering local reaction to the death of Osama bin Laden on Monday added to schedule craziness.

I find it difficult to plan ahead for healthy meals when I’m on the run all the time. I’ve gotten better about this over the years, but I still grab for the quickest and easiest thing when I’m short on time. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the healthiest thing.

I’ve also dealt with some crazy emotional stuff this weekβ€”you know, it’s that raising teenager thing again! One of the things I tend to do when I need to comfort myself is eat. And again, it’s not always the healthiest stuff out there that I nosh on when I’m feeling down.

This week, I have to give kudos and thanks to the group. Even though this is a competition, everyone helps each other out. The group’s Facebook page always provides a word of encouragement when I need it the most. And a few morning walks around Lake Shawnee with Amy have helped both my spirits and my hind quarters!
