Itβs been four years since the football team has won a state championship (the team defeated West Essex 21-6 in the Section I Group II championship game in 2008). If this yearβs team has its way, the drought will be over at the end of this season.
The team met the media and its fans at the annual football media day festivities on Saturday.
βThe summerβs been great so far, but Iβm looking forward to getting into the season and leading this team to a state championship,β said junior J.R. Reese, the Falconsβ quarterback who is starting varsity for his third year. βIβve learning to throw more wisely, and I know we can do this.β

βJ.R. is a very strong and intelligent quarterback,β said head coach Joe Mattessich. βI donβt have to tell him where to throw the ball anymore. He decides where heβs going to throw. Heβs great at reading the oppositionβs defense.β
Reeseβs leading receiver will be senior Danny Brown, who Mattessich described as βan extraordinary runner.

βHeβs our go-to receiver,β Mattessich said. βHe has the knowledge to communicate with J.R.β
Brown relishes those words.
βItβs a big role, but Iβm ready to take it on,β he said. βJ.R. and I are real close. He knows where Iβm going to be before I even get there.β
One of Reeseβs protectors will be senior right guard A.J. Willard.
βHeβs as strong as an ox,β Mattessich said. βHe bench presses 415 pounds. Heβll be a great contributor this year.β
As for defense, the Falcon to watch is senior Lauren βLoloβ Sanchez.
βHeβs absolutely unblockable,β Mattessich said of Sanchez. βHe causes havoc on the field. He gives us fits. Sometimes I have to tell him in practice to calm down and let us run some plays.β
Like his teammates, Sanchez sees a state championship in the Falconsβ future, and he believes that he will be a major contributor to that success.
βI canβt get touched. Iβm fast off the ball,β Sanchez, who has set a 100-tackle goal for himself, said. βIβve been playing football since I was a little kid. Itβs what I live for.
βThe team has been working hard together this year, and I know we can go far.β
The Falcons open the season on Sept. 7 at home against Newton at 7 p.m.
