Teen Dies Following 3-Vehicle Crash Involving Stolen Car In Ewing, Prosecutor Says

The crash occurred after a stolen car ran a red light, hit a vehicle, then hit a traffic pole during a police chase, authorities said.

EWING, NJ — A 13-year-old girl has died of her injuries following a three-vehicle crash that involved a stolen vehicle and a police chase in late December, a spokesperson for the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office told Patch.

The girl, who has not been identified by authorities, was a passenger in the vehicle that was struck by a stolen car on Dec. 19, the spokesperson said.

Around 7 p.m. that day, police said the stolen car was traveling north on Prospect Street at the intersection of Parkway Avenue when police tried to stop it using overhead lights.

After trying to stop the driver, authorities said the stolen vehicle eluded police “at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner,” which led to the stolen vehicle disregarding a red light, hitting another vehicle and then hitting a traffic light pole.

The officer’s patrol car then crashed into the stolen vehicle, prosecutors said.

There were four people inside the struck vehicle, including two adults and two children, authorities said. Emergency services responded to the crash and brought the occupants of the struck vehicle to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment.

A girl in the vehicle suffered critical injuries from the crash and died the following day, prosecutors said.

Following the crash, police arrested and charged two teens who were inside the stolen vehicle. Authorities did not release the names of those charged.

According to a report from NJ Advance Media, the prosecutor’s office later added charges of aggravated manslaughter and death by auto for the driver of the stolen vehicle, and a traffic offense that alleges the driver caused a death while operating a vehicle as an unlicensed driver.
