After conducting a nationwide search, Newark Academy has decided to promote from within and has named West Orange resident Ted Gilbreath its new athletic director effective July 1.
Gilbreath, who has taught humanities at the school since 2005, has served as the head boys lacrosse coach at the school.
“I was drawn to Newark Academy because I was looking for a challenging academic environment that valued experiences outside of the classroom as well,” he said, adding, “NA’s arts and athletics programs and its interest in global and cultural awareness were really intriguing to me,” Gilbreath said.
“Accepting the position here has been one of the best decisions I’ve made,” he continued, “I love my current job, but I’m also excited to have the opportunity to continue to further NA’s mission as the new director of athletics.”
The school reviewed 100 applications for the job and interviewed seven semi-finalists before narrowing the list down to three finalists. The finalists then met with groups of students, coaches, administrators, parents and trustees before Gilbreath was chosen.
Gilbreath impressed the search committee with his passion to promote athletics at Newark Academy.
““I believe that an excellent school charges itself to go beyond academic education and strives to find those teachable moments in every activity students are engaged. Being on the athletic field provides me with a host of opportunities to teach to values that I think are essential to the development of students with real character,” Gilbreath said.
Newark Academy is located at 91 S. Livingston Ave. in Livingston.
