Possible Measles Exposure At Newark Airport Amid Holiday Travel: Health Officials

NEWARK, NJ — Officials have identified someone with measles who had been in Newark Liberty International Airport less than a week before Christmas Day, and are warning residents of potential exposure.

According to the NJ Department of Health, a non-New Jersey resident was in Newark Airport on Dec. 19. Officials said that anyone who was in Terminal B and Terminal C between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. that day could have been exposed.

Information on the patient’s other whereabouts within those 12 hours was not made immediately available.

As of Dec. 26, no additional cases have been reported to the DOH.

Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that usually appears between three and five days after symptoms begin.

“The rash usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread downward to the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet,” a DOH statement read. “Measles can also cause serious complications, such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and can lead to miscarriage in pregnant people, premature birth, or a low-birth-weight baby.”

Individuals who think they may have contracted the virus should call their local health department or a health care provider before going to any medical office or emergency department, health officials say.

This is the 11th confirmed case of measles in New Jersey in 2025.
