Newark Academy Student Honored for Musical Prowess

Sixth-grader Maria Armas honored as Mayo Performing Arts Center's Music Students of the Month.

Five area music students, include a Newark Academy sixth-grader, were honored late last month as the Mayo Performing Arts Center's Music Students of the Month, sponsored by Verizon.

Maria Armas, who was nominated by her music teacher Michelle Uhler, has been taking private lessons with Uhler because she felt she wasn’t being challenged enough, according to a bio provided by the school.

Uhler said Armas is a top-notch student who works really hard at whatever she does. Although she is not yet at the level of an "advanced" pianist, she practices almost 5 hours a week while still maintaining an “excellent academic average and participating in other activities as well.”

Students were nominated by their teachers and were chosen by the theatre's education department based on their commitment to and excellence in the performing arts.

The theatre will honor a group of students every month throughout the season those students will be invited to perform at a year-end recital in June.
