Temple's Purim Spiel a big hit for congregants, guests.

As part of its Purim celebration recently, members of  B’nai Jeshurun of Short Hill put together a performance, or Purim Spiel called "Purimania II — The Wizard of Oyz" for congregants and guests.

Purim, the joyous Jewish holiday that celebrates the Persian Jews victory over the evil Prime Minister Haman, tells the story of Queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai and how they convinced the Persian king Ahasuerus of Haman’s decree to wipe out the country’s Jewish population. Haman was later hanged for his attempt.

During the holiday, congregants blot out Haman’s name each time it is read in the Purim scroll, or Megillah with loud groggers or noisemakers. Hamantaschen, or three-sided cookies said to resemble Haman's hat, are also eaten at this time.

B’nai Jeshurun put on the performance as part of the evening's celebration.
