Three-peat at EIES
On "Give 5" Day, three Patchers did a third volunteer stint at EIES.
It was a good day at EIES, in many ways. Patcher Rebecca Hughes, Kelly Feeney and I returned to EIES in South Orange for a third "Give 5" visit. Volunteers are the heart of EIES, which serves those who are visually impaired. Readers speak articles and books onto tape; those tapes are played via a special radio to those who have trouble seeing.
In addition, EIES is celebrating a 2010 Check into Literacy Award. Verizon gave the organization funding for ongoing literacy efforts.
Patch staff participate in "Give 5," five days each year when we volunteer in our communities. It's exciting to get into the action and behind the scenes at organizations that support our town. EIES is especially meaningful since it strives to make news and literature accessible to all. Last time I was here I read military history; someday perhaps I'll read Patch.
