How Did A Long Branch Fire Department Heirloom End Up On e-Bay?

The 14k badge once belonged to Fire Chief Joseph A. Burns, according to fire department's facebook page.

LONG BRANCH, NJ - Some members of the Historic Long Branch City Fire Department would like to know how former Fire Chief Joseph A. Burns' badge ended up for sale on e-Bay.

"It's a real shame when you see a department heirloom for sale on E Bay," the department's Facebook page states. "Here's Chief Joseph A. Burns' badge from 1902. The family has no knowledge how this badge got out of the family."

The 14k gold badge is listed on e-Bay for $1,999. There is no "best offer" option for the badge, but the buyer does get free shipping. The badge is inscribed "Joseph A. Burns, Chief Engineer" on the back.

"Here is a rare presentation badge in 14K gold," the description states. "The face shows "Chief L.B.F.D." and now two Ebay Community Members have researched and educated me that this is from Long Branch, New Jersey."

The seller says the previous owner of the badge believed it to be from New York, which led to an incorrect listing at first, according to the description.
